My Fitness Journey

My Fitness Journey

I have found myself talking about Fitness and Nutrition many times with family, friends and sometimes strangers so I have decided to start blogging about it. In the past two years, I have learned so much about fitness and nutrition that I had never known. From about 11 years I would say I was obese at least for my age and I have struggled with weight since then till today, but at least now I have the knowledge to help me maintain a healthy lifestyle while I aim to reach my ideal weight. Struggling with weight issues is not easy especially when you have no clue what to do and everyone expects you to do something about it. I naturally have a good appetite so telling me to stop eating wasn’t going to be my solution. I did manage to lose some weight in 2012 as I was getting ready for my graduation. That year and I had a goal to look good on my graduation, I guess that’s where I failed. My goal was for an occasion, not a lifetime, when I returned home I didn’t have access to a good gym like the one I enjoyed while I was in Malaysia, I had no Job, then I moved to Tanzania for about a year for an internship where I gained about 20 Kgs in 6 months, Yeah I know that sounds impossible but I did and it was horrible. It’s not until now that I realize how bad it was. I will share some pictures here for you to see. When I returned home I was ready for all kinds of comments from family and friends and I was also mentally prepared for it. I tried to take no offense to any comments and I was also determined to do something about it. My Dad is one of the people who didn’t let me have it easy, it was tough love all the way. I was fortunate enough and a great new gym opened called WAKA FITNESS, they opened on a Monday and I joined on a Wednesday. I didn’t know how I was going to lose all that weight but the way the facility was set up I knew I had come to right place and indeed I had. I give credit to my Dad for paying for my annual membership at WAKA FITNESS, there is no better way to support someone than to do it financially given that I would never have afforded it myself.

Within the first year at WAKA FITNESS a weight loss program was introduced and designed by students from Denmark who had a full workout plan and diet we were supposed to follow, we were a group of 6 ladies that underwent this program (WAKA YOU 2.0) and we all had amazing results, I managed to loose 11 KGS in 12 weeks and even after the program I continued to do the workouts and followed the diet, and I was able to lose 24 KGS in total within a year. The workouts we did we mostly strength training and High-intensity interval training, I enjoyed these workouts because they were different from the traditional way of training like cardio where you have to run for 1 hour, cycle for 30 minutes. Instead, these workouts were intense but short. The diet was mostly a low-carb diet and we were simply told of foods we could and could not eat. We also followed a guideline called the WAKA Plate, this plate should be half vegetables, protein should amount to the size of your palm, and a small handful of fat. The trainers we were assigned to were very helpful and they helped us to follow this diet by keeping us accountable each day.

So overall between March 2014 and December 2015 I lost 24 KGS however I traveled to the US for only 2 WEEKS and gained almost 5 KGS, it’s as easy as breathing for me to gain weight, It took me almost 5 months to lose those KGS after that I simply maintained my normal 88 KGS, people don’t realize that maintaining the weight is actually the hardest part, I had to continue working out at least 3-4 times a week and had to maintain a healthy diet; few cheat meals here and there 😉 However, I felt like I hadn’t really achieved my ideal weight so I was lucky enough the gym started this new challenge called the WAKA 12 – Team Weight Loss Challenge. Continue to read my next post about this challenge.
